So there's these two younger (18 year old) girls I work with who have started reading the (in)famous Fifty Shades of Grey books. Great. Broaden your horizons girls. The problem is, the two of them being so young, so "innocent", so clueless. It has made any discussion on the books completely useless. They just finished the first book and now they think they know everything there is to know about the BDSM culture and lifestyle. They speak like they are all knowing, and I can't correct them. I can't tell them that this amateur erotica is just a fantasy situation and that the situation in the book is unlikely at best.
The thing that gets me about books like these or other BDSM themed pop culture mediums, is that they always paint the active people as either criminals, or mentally unstable. From my experiences those people only make up a part of the community, and for the most part, their messed up posts do not contribute to their BDSM activities. As well, being in the BDSM community does not mean we are into, kidnapping, rape, etc. We are not criminals, in fact, we frown upon most criminal activity. I just recently watched an epiosde of Criminal Minds where a man kidnapped a girl and kept her as a BDSM sex slave. There have been numerous episodes of CSI, Law & Order, Criminal Minds, etc that portray crimes based in BDSM. It's annoying.
